Born in 1950 in Martinez, California, I observed the change and decline of the natural environment. This greatly influenced my artistic interests. The beauty, complexity and diversity of nature have always been the focus of my work. At age eight I had my first oil painting instruction. My first painting of Yosemite Valley and its reflection in the Merced River, was rendered from a postcard. Great Uncle Phillip Menard, an accomplished Sacramento Valley landscape painter, lived with our family on occasion and was an early mentor.
Graduating from UC Santa Barbara in 1972, I sketched my way around Europe and North Africa for a year. I was able to study and attempt to learn from the masters in the great museums of Europe.
I utilize photography as a tool to help with greater observation of my subjects. The details aid my attempts to make paintings read as well from up close as from a distance. My primary goal is to have the viewer want to climb into the landscape and experience a particular time and place. Abstract designs and patterns found in nature are elements I convey in my work. Boats also have held a lifelong attraction for me and their reflections often surface as my subject.
I have worked in most 2D mediums. These include oils, etchings, lithographs, colored pencil and oil pastels. Ranging in size from large murals to miniature paintings, all provide their own particular challenges and intrigue for me.
